Bloopers: Estudyante Blues

My memory is not so good, but whenever someone makes a striking statement, it's just so hard to forget it. :)

The Adjective
English subject. There's this test to supply an adjective for each given noun. Upon receiving my checked test paper, I became puzzled. There's this item that was marked wrong. Noun: accident - I put there 'dangerous'. Okay 'dangerous accident' might not be too logical, I know, but somehow that's the first word that popped into my mind then. I seldom ask questions in any class (in fact I dislike people who keeps on asking questions, stupid or not) Anyway, that time, being a curious kid, I approached this English teacher and asked her softly why. She gave me a pissed look, 'all accidents are dangerous' she said. So I asked, 'can you give me examples of what adjectives are you expecting for this item?' She answered me, 'you can just put there big accident'.

WHooat? Even up to now, I have never seen headlines like 'A big accident happened in Makati'. Probably my 'dangerous' and her 'big' are just of the same level. Too bad, I was expecting some brilliant answers. ;p

The Warning
I was asked to join a math intersection contest with two other classmates. There was this round wherein we're supposed to perform calculations mentally, the rule is no scratch paper/pencil. I think it's a habit for some to raise their hands at table level and sort of like scribbling to perform calculations, you know the typical 'malayo ang tingin' look and and your hands doodling in the air. (try it so you can picture) Anyway that time, I might have started doing that 'action' during the contest.

Guess what? The Math org officer cum host of the contest that time called a warning. Warning to team XXX (my team). We would like to remind you that in this round, there should be no scratch paper, no pencils or ballpens, and that includes 'NO WRITINGS IN THE AIR'. This is your first offense. 2nd offense will mean disqualification.

Arrgh. Does he have to do that in front of hundreds of students? Hahaha pathetic!

Is there really such rule as 'no writings in the air'. I havent taken a public licensure exam yet. From what I heard CPA has items where no scratch paper is allowed, probably same for engineering. Maybe they should hire special proctors to check if anyone is 'writing in the air'. If there is, maybe they should send those students out of the room. :p

For additional info, this person seems to be brilliant. I heard he/she finished some Laude degree in a top university, worked for several big names (companies). A successful one indeed. But somehow, I just find it hard to respect him/her for that queer rule. hehehe :p

Let's leave the specific profiles anonymous. The intent is not to jeopardize any person or school. :p

Dont worry, I will pass these precious learnings to the next generation. Please avoid big accidents and remember not to write anything in the air.

Just for Laughs: cR0oKeD LoGIC

Loves makes the world go round and crazy
- the world itself is round, there's no other way to go but to follow the cycle, which is round. And people are all crazy whether they admit it or not. So with or without love, the world is round and people are crazy. Just that, an obvious truth. Love can do and should do much better than that.

First impression lasts
- Impressions in general dont last, whether it's the first or the last. Impressions are just foreplay, a prelude. More often than not, impression is just based on some bandwagon effect, people are copycats and tend to copy what his neighbors think. And a person's memory retention is just so bad that impressions are just minutely insignificant in proportion to time. Poor human creatures.

Silent waters run deep
- It might not be its own will to be silent in the first place. It might want to flow with the current but some intangible object is blocking its way, keeping it silent. Well maybe some big stones or icebergs are pulling down its leg. It might not have enough courage to trample over the obstacles, thus staying put in status quo. Just because it's not moving doesn't necessarily mean it's deep. Mere perception. There's always two sides of a coin.

First things first
- First things are not firsts. They get solved the last most of the time. It is human nature that resists the impending should be 'firsts' candidates in the priority list, the important and difficult ones are usually left last or left out, unknowingly or purposedly. Cowardice makes us run away from it, but we tend to fool ourselves that we are organized and focused, trapped in our own make-believe perfect world.

The eyes are the windows of our soul
- Should be 'The soul is the window of our eyes'. It's the soul that sees the real thing. So it sends a message to the nerve of the eye then to the brain cells to interpret it.

What is essential is invisible to the naked eye
- contradicting previous statement. Who cares what you dont see? Tangible and visible things that people care the most like wealth and beauty breed greed into this evil world. Only a few believes otherwise, and hence becomes a minority, an outcast, a paradox. But still, being an exception to the norm doesn't make them lesser of a person.

With great power comes great responsibilities
- So untrue. More and greater responsibility goes to the complacent and industrious worker who just bows to orders and takes in more tasks, in short they are the ants. See those with great power in the real world, they sit at the top, smiling, relaxing, and just play the game by assigning more responsibility to the ants. Hence the evolution of the sugar-coated word called 'delegation' and they continue to enjoy the adoration of their worshippers. There's one thing people of power and influence are pretty good at though. Statement should be 'With great power comes great Scandal'. For more information, refer to Philippine government's Lozada ZTE scam, HK entertainment industry's Edison Chen scandal and office politics - I believe each big company has its own fair share.

Dont judge the book by its cover
- Well a book and a cover are separate entities. Who says the author is always the designer of the book cover? It doesn't happen all the time, I think they hire some graphic artists to do it for them. Let's say the next time you buy an expensive new cool shirt that turns out not to fit you so well upon wearing it in a party, do you want to be criticized that you have an awful body or would you rather just pass the blame on that despicable stupid ugly shirt?

*If the content has offended the originators or believers of the popular sayings, I apologize. These are actually good quotes I myself believe in :). Hey I like Spiderman and Little Prince. Just need some substance to experiment with my first attempt on satirical literary composition. Whew maybe I should start consulting Zafra. If she has Twisted, I think I can start my Crooked :p Main difference is.. I'm not sure mine's gonna sell any. :D. Btw nice image taken from the net, it says it all.

Booboos in Cooking

Failures...are like pins in bowling that we want to eradicate. ---That is the first line of an article I was asked to write for HS school paper. (hehe see, yun level ko pwede na pla pangpublish). Segway: I used to like bowling but it doesn't seem to like me, thus the marrige is not successful :p

There are a lot of inspiring books. Rich Dad Poor Dad or some other success stories of millionaires. I just notice one thing. How come they only feature the SUCCESS part in full details, but mention the FAILURES in passing.

As a reader or a learner, I think it would be more effective to know WHAT TO AVOID, the common mistakes, the pitfalls. More often, recurring strategies might not work all the time, but recurring mistake experienced by many is what I'd be interest to know first, so I wont commit them again. However, probably it's the pride of the authors, they want to forget these failures and shrug it totally off their systems. That's why they dont want to showcase their failures. Thus, everyone keeps on repeating the same common mistakes.

Recently I had a failure attempt on cooking. I prepared steamed pork balls and guess what they look like after.. gross.. a friend even described it as similar to T-A-?. hahahaha okay what went wrong..

1) It's more common to prepare beef balls than pork balls. You would see beef balls in dimsum house, shade is dark brown. Using pork makes the color pale brown and not that appealing. But hey even beef balls look gross isnt it?
(First pic is mine, 2nd pic is beef balls taken from net)

2) It's my first time to do actual steaming. Steaming doesnt add any magic to colors, it's an 'as is' state, transparent, no camouflage. And even paler.

3) I was too lazy to buy siomai wrappers, it could have looked more delightful.

4) And most importantly the culprit, TOYO! Soy sauce in SG is different than in Ph. There are two kinds of soy sauce here, the light soy sauce that is very salty, the dark soy sauce which looks like squid ink but not salty. They dont have something similar to Silver Swan. It's kinda tricky using them. Actually overall taste is quite okay, but the appearance admittedly is bad, I think nobody will eat them even if I pay $ bucks :p

Because of wanting to erase that shame, just tonight I did a pasta dish. See for the first time I featured a non-Chinese dish. Carbonara. (bits of ham, chicken strips, mushroom and green peas in creamy white sauce) ...

Carbonara picture just POSTED! In fairness, good enough for me! dendendenden

P.S. It takes COURAGE to admit FAILURES! hahaha hope you had a good laugh. See that's why I dont want to cook for other people. Pressure! :)

Hair Craze

One of the things I would love spending on is hair. :) It's one of the very few physical things I think I can somewhat have a little pride on.

Anyway, haircut is so expensive here! It costs at least 45sgd in a salon inside a mall. (1350php). There are cheapo ones though, the 10-minute haircut salon priced at 10sgd (300php), but usually it will turn out a disaster. Heard lots of complaints from people who tried it, hindi pantay ang gupit, which only led them spending on another haircut in a decent salon. A salon around the corner (in tagalog: asa tabi-tabi na hindi sikat) will cost at least 25sgd (750php).

Years back, I've tried streaks highlights, perming and rebonding. Last January after I arrive in SG, I decided to have my hair dyed, it's my first time and well for some cause hehe. Anyway, my sister suggested I should try copper brown. So be it, I told the stylist I want copper brown, something that is visible. The stylist is a Shanghaihese. From what I could sense, he's suggesting something not that light, probably a walnut brown shade. He asked me where I work, I said IT deployed in some banks (btw IT jobs in SG are mostly in banks). He said from what he knows, banks are strict with the physical appearance of their employees, should look decent enough, prim and proper, and that means no 'glaring' hair colors or highlights. Geesh in the first time I am being 'adventurous', after being stuck in this same old look for the past 26 years of my life, how come the stylist seems to be more conservative than I expected. Hahaha.

Anyway funny thing is after the whole thing, I actually wasnt satisfied in the salon. Probably it's their lighting, I DONT find my dyed hair visible! He seems to sense it, and he told me if I really insisted, I can come back to redo the dye for free. Still, I'm still okay because most importantly, the dye didnt damage my hair.

The next few days, I then realized. The color is getting lighter, especially at night. The brown is very visible. BUTI NA LANG I listened to him, tama lng ang color, lighter than that I really might have problems, I'm not as adventurous as I expected afterall hahaha. Lalo na the first few days, ang tingkad (o baka ndi lng ako sanay), para akong typical japanese. Hehe lesson learnt.. trust the experts on their craft.

I'll update this topic once I get another hair makeover attack, not that soon. I'm still enjoying the current one. :p

The Scandal

Aint this lady lovely?

Her name is Gillian, a member of a duo called Twinz, a pair of popular singer/actress/teen icon in HK. Also appointed by HK government as ambassadors of goodwill, role models for the youth. She is one of the prettiest faces I've seen among Asian artists (na hindi retokado)

News broked out last week of January, rather a big scandal that has already been featured worldwide including CNN. Racy photos of Edison Chen, a popular HK actor, making out with different HK celebrities (READ: A-list celebrites and NOT starlets), one of which is Gillian --- which really surprises a lot of people, myself included.

Edison Chen's profile - age 28. Raised in Canada. One of the hottest male actors/singers/product endorser/model in HK. Famous enough to open his own clothing line few years back. He stars in Gen-X Cops movie. I used to find him cool. But after knowing he shoots video of all her 20+ gf/flings.. hmm uggh no comment :p

The leakage of the photos is due to Edison having his laptop repaired. My initial reaction is.. what an IDIOT! Doesnt he know that he should delete those files first? Then someone told me that the pictures were actually 'deleted' already from his Recycle Bin. However the technician used some software to retrieve the 'deleted' files from his Macbook and of course wanted to make money by blackmailing. That is really wow, I didnt know such softwares existed! (huli ako sa mga balita hehe) Okay Edison's stupidity forgiven to some extent.. but then 1300 racy photos are already out, posted in internet. I pity them especially the women featured in the scandal.

Different comments surfaced. Some curse them for being so obscene and hypocrites (wholesome innocent image yet sa loob ang kulo)... and a few supporters say they pledge support as they understand artists are also human.

My take:
I don't want to comment whether what they did is wrong or right. Bahala sila kung ano gusto nilang gawin. Just one thing, popular celebrities have 'social responsibility'. People look up to you, waste so much money patronizing your products. It's a fair package - you earn millions, your private life sacrificed. The least you can do is to be careful and live up to the image you are projecting.

Posting Habits

In case you notice, I normally don't mention names online. Especially my family, I don't like sharing their pictures in public. I don't know, maybe it's a sign of security protection. (I just have this mindset na ayoko lng mandamay ng iba)

3 Common Pitfalls: (in my definition)
1) Frequent namedropping
- I find it silly to see labelling pictures (in friendster or the likes) based on names of people appearing in the image. 2 or 3 people should still be fine, but anything more than 5 that doesn't make sense. Does everyone need to know who you are with?

2) Showing your Itinerary
- I usually post things that have happened, not those that are about to happen. I don't think it's a good idea to maintain a public scheduler, unless you are comfortable with that. Also don't agree with showing personal contact details like address and phone#s online. I remember some people complaining that they are being 'stalked' because of their posts.. Aint it stupid? :p

3) Unrotated pictures
- This one is real funny. I occasionally see people posting inverted pictures online. I dont think there's a valid excuse of not knowing how to flip/rotate pictures for any literate person age 28 and below. Come on it's already the PC-age, we all reached the period of using computers, at least in college days.

Sorry, just some harsh observations. :)

Chained Hearts for Valentine's

I took this image from Sentosa Flower Festival. I like it. :)

Just some quotes to share for post-Valentine's

It's better to have love and lost than never to have loved at all.
I am reminded of this while watching the trailer of a local movie here. Quite deep.

If loving you is a sin, then I want to be jailed forever.
This is a funny quote, which I first heard from Rico Yan (nun buhay pa cya).

A Rare 'Friendships'

I just feel like blogging about my kumare.

It's not common when you run into people that jives with you at the slightest effort. We met actually late last year and became really good friends. Gosh, I would have missed a lot of interesting stuff if she weren't my companion. From shopping to buffet to KTV to camwhoring to foreign movies and chinese concerts, and of course the meaningful girl talks and life sharing sessions. Perfect! Ayoko pa naman magyaya ng taong hindi game or napipilitan lng. It affects my level of satisfaction if my companion was just half-hearted and being dragged. Mapili ako hehehe! And also, it is always the 'quality' I'm after, not quantity. There are a lot of people who are crowd-centric, the more the merrier mindset. I don't really care kung dalawa lng kami, as long as we're both enjoying - that's the bottomline.

Initially I was thinking there might be some sort of awkwardness. Our moms are kumare, and of course I (or we both) have to behave para naman walang masumbong na kung ano hahaha. And yet, wala agad ang awkwardness since day1 she arrived here.

Nakakatuwa is that parehas kaming game. I would remember our hotel buffet escapades where we really glamored up just to pig out and posed like models in the corridors hihi. Hey OFWs need to give themselves a break once in a while. May Dey-Op (day-off) dapat paminsan-minsan. haha.

I somehow nearly forgotten how it is like having a true friend (female). I just had a bad experience early last year when trust is put into question. I'm not really a racist, but in sensitive aspects, I would think Fil-Chis are normally more ethical. oops bahala na ang tamaan. In my few uwi's, the FilChi friends somehow dont make a big blabber about me treating them. Ang mga Pinoy talga hilig magkantiyaw ng libre wehehe. Hindi naman ako kuripot, ok lang magtreat pero sana mas gusto ako nagtretreat ako dahil gusto ko, hindi dahil kinukulit ako. :p

And I realize I have a scarcity of really close girl friends. Mas madami atang guy friends (bka nga lalaki ako in past life hehe) Anyway, karamihan ng mga kaclose ko na babae, hmm how to describe it, we somehow lost communication and drifted apart or some have left the country. But I do feel my kumare is a friend for keeps. We're both pleasant people. :)

It's not so common to bump into people who are really knowledgeable in Chinese/Mandarin. GI na kung GI wehehe okay lng. Basta we know Jay Chou rules. :p and funny thing is we seem to grow up in HK-dominated series at home in our childhood. There was this HK gambling drama that really left a big impression on me. Title is Tu Sen Mi Chi. and my kumare also watched it! It has a funny love story in it. The guy is a god of gamblers, he has a childhood female friend who is boyish and a tindera ng isda sa palengke. This tindera admitted to him several times that she likes him. The guy always took her for granted and called her 'tomboy'. But nonetheless they were still close friends and confided to each other. The gambler had a huge crush on some girl. Later on, the tindere also had a suitor who proposed to her. Because of the frequent rejections of the gambler, tindera finally agreed to marry her suitor. As expected, the gambler finally realized that tindera meant much to him more than a friend, and went gate-crashing during the wedding ceremony. BUT the tindera didnt just concede huh.. she said something striking.. I can still remember the dialogue (Mandarin version) clearly. Haay wish I could type Mandarin. It goes something like this.

'.. if I were married already and have kids at this very moment when you realize your feelings for me.. do you want me to abandon my husband and leave my kids to run with you...'

Napagod na kasi si tindera.. parang napikon na cya bkit sobrang late na narealize ni gambler.. for the longest time na parati cyang tinetake for granted.

Ending.. hmm find out for yourself. I was quite surprised to see this drama aired before in Channel 13 (very long time ago). I think that time I kept on rewinding/watching the last few episodes of that drama (panahon pa ng VHS!) hahaha.

Anyway seems like I am diverting too much from the topic. I was supposed to blog about my kumare hehe. Anyway, nice to meet an endangered specie. *wink*

P.S.
Oh well medyo magulo ang isip ko lately. I have a feeling of 'drifting'. Nalulungkot ako. (see this is the blog with the most tagalog words, tinamad na ako mag-english :p).

Tree in Heaven and Reviews of what's NOT hot

Last Dec, an officemate lent me a korean series titled 'Tree in Heaven'. It's not really something I was wanting to watch.

I actually am quite choosy with themes. I don't like wasting time. Whenever someone offers to lend me a series or a book, I would have some pressure hehe. I wont be able to fake it returning the items and tell them it's great when I havent even touched them. So PLEASE dont lend me anything unless:
1) I have expressed obvious interest
2) if you think it's something HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and you are confident that you can change my mind.

Hahaha. Enough of the introduction.

Anyway, I didnt have much expectations on TIH. Except that the leads are familiar faces, they are the young version of Stairways to Heaven leads in the first episode. It was a short 12-episode series which I was able to finish during the CNY holiday. And finishing it in a little 4-day period means it is quite GOOD. Good that it was able to sustain my interest. I would rate it a 75 out of a 100% satisfaction.

It was again a typical tear-jerker theme. A bit of copycat details from Endless Love 1 (they cant fall in love because they are stepbrothers and stepsisters) and also Stairway to Heaven (the morbid donation of body organs - i definitely hate this... so extremes!). Overall, acting is quite good. Boy, I dont know how Korean stars manage to cry with so many tears like that coming from a dripping faucet. The last episode got me crying hard again (it's been some time since I watch something that made me cry) A depressing story.

I will try to recount the COMMON or MUST-HAVE elements of a typical koreanovela:
1) the story should start from childhood
2) there is a bike scene.
3) a drastic tragedy - someone has to die of terminal disease eg cancer
4) the hug from behind. (my sisters fondly call it the Tentacles hug)
5) the leads are good in crying
6) amnesia, someone has forgotten the past
7) a token of love - most of the time it's a necklace and it's given during their childhood days
8) a very nice setting to complement the story, green fields or snowy places
9) a touching OST, the songs that can break your heart
10) usually good-looking cast. But more often, I think they have much more pretty girls, the guys arent good-looking but they usually are the type na 'magaling magdala kahit hindi gwapo' :)

***Pitstop***
I posted few months ago the korean series 'War of Money'. I don't recommend it, a lousy ending.

Anyway maybe my 'taste' is not reliable hihi. There are 2 movies which everyone fuzzes about how good it is yet I dont find them good.

The first is The Notebook. Ewan ko, hindi talaga ako naiyak at all. A lot of people claims that it is the most touching romantic spectacular love story. BUT I find the theme COMMON in Asian movies or soaps.

The second is Kung Fu Hustle. I've watched a lot of Stephen Chow's movies, and for me this is not his BEST work so far. The ending was too simple, like he suddenly learnt kungfu because the nerves of his body complied with the kungfu stream. (Ren Tu Er Mai) This is too much common for chinese kungfu themes (or perhaps mataas ang standards ko because I've watched a lot of those already). Still kungfu is not Stephen's best subject, I wonder why he chose it. For me, his comedy antics and punchlinese delivery are far better in God of Cookery or Shaolin Soccer.

Just my two cents. :)

On TV

After the long CNY holiday, I went to office quite late the following Monday. Half-groggy and sleepy, the usual syndrome from long holiday. I just grabbed an old blouse and somewhat loose pants, in short one of those losyang or hindi maporma days hehe.

Guess what, may shooting pala sa office. ChannelNewsAsia, the news program, went here to feature the company and some IT news etc. They needed to take some video clips of conference ala-meeting poses. A colleage approached me and said 'can you spare two minutes, we're hoping you could join us because we need some Asian/Oriental faces to feature a diversed culture'

Ngak, kahit pang-extra lng, sana naman tumapat sa araw na maayos ang hitsura ko. Hehehe.

P.S. Btw this is my 2nd TV appearance. The first was.. hmm secret :p. And actually I haven't seen if they were really featured in TV. hahaha bka niloloko lng ako.

My CNY Menu

Here's the new episode for my Food Lab series. Slight improvement in garnishing and arrangement.

See what I've got for Chinese New Year menu. Thanks again to the photoshop guru for the collage. :)

Difference of Rich and Poor Countries

I saw this from a blog. I totally agree with what it has to say.

Here's the article

On analyzing the behavior of the people in rich & developed countries, we find that the great majority follow the following principles in their lives:

1. Ethics, as a basic principle.
2. Integrity.
3. Responsibility.
4. Respect to the laws & rules.
5. Respect to the rights of other citizens.
6. Work loving.
7. Strive for savings & investment.
8. Will of super action.
9. Punctuality.
10. and of course...Discipline

In poor countries, only a minority follow these basic principles in their daily life.

We are poor because we lack the correct attitude. We lack the will to comply with and teach these functional principles of rich & developed societies.

Personal Comments:
The above qualities are actually basic, very SOP things, yet unfortunately some Filipinos fail to comply. If we can only strike an effort to stick to those principles, I guess the world will be a better place to live in. (hehe world peace)

Recently, there's a shocking bill that brought all OFWs in a state of dismay. In short, the bill wanted the following conditions for future OFWs:
Source: http://www.gmanews.tv/story/77354/Warning-aired-vs-new-hiring-policy-for-OFWs

1. repatriation bond of 5000usd from the prospect employer from each OFW
2. all overseas job offers must go through Phil-accredited agencies (POEA, DOLE, etc)
3. an overseas employer can hire up to a max of 5 Filipino direct hires.

What the heck?! This will only cause red tape, less job opportunities and more kurakot money for the Phil govt. And who says only Phil has talents? We will lose to China and India eventually. Oh well I just learned that 13% of Philippines GNP comes from OFW's remittances. The reason why peso is gaining value is just that. So hindi pa pla enough at kelangan makihati pa sa kinikita ng OFW. Oh well, good thing that stupid bill is on hold for now.

Last year when I got here Mar07, my first remittance is at a rate of 1SGD=30.3php. Last Dec07, remittance rate hit a big low of 1SGD=28.14php.

Oh well, that's life.

Music and Lyrics

Finally got to watch Music and Lyrics. (I bought a pirated DVD during my last vacation :p)

Theme is simple. Hugh Grant is a 'laos' singer-composer who needs to complete a piece for a famous teen diva, then he met Drew Barrymore who is a born lyricist. The whole story just revolves around how they finish the song, and of course, 'nadevelop' sila in the process.

The one catchy dialogue. I cant remember the exact lines but the thought is something like this. Music is physical, the attraction, or 'sex'. Lyrics is the personality, the soul. The two has to blend together. Hmm nice comparison. :)

There's something about Hugh. I can always sense a sincere hue in his portrayals. Like his previous films 'Notting Hill' and 'Love Actually'. He did it again hehe. Same with Drew. They both have the charisma. And oh, I like their song. :)

Overall, a good movie though not spectacular, but still worth your time. Ending says they got married. Come to think of it, what a nice couple. One writes the lyrics, the other writes the scores --- perfect teamwork ... the essence of what marriage is. Nood na, feel good movie. :)

Just Dunk It!

The movie I've been waiting to watch this Feb, so desperately. :)

Kung Fu Dunk, stars Jay Zhou and a whole bunch of familiar HK stars. As the title implies, it talks about basketball with a fun pinch of kungfu (Jay Zhou's a student of kungfu school). A sharp shooter, rebound player, and so many cool and funny dunk scenes. Personally, I would say Kung Fu Dunk is a bit similar to Shaolin Soccer.

There are some OA, exaggerated scenes that somehow lose the 'connect' with the overall elements.. Well it's a typical HongKee CNY-featured film. So please stop criticizing hehe.

Gee I just realize slam dunking is overwhelming. :)
